Preparing for an Internship
Recently my professor discussed the suggested steps one should follow to prepare for an internship. As I listened, the thought of sharing the information at hand to other college students came to me. And what better way than to write an article on Uloop?
There may be some points that are extremely obvious and others that are not as apparent, but it is better to be informed and informed again than preparing for an internship incorrectly.
1. Keep your GPA above at least a 3.0.
Make sure that your current study method is efficient and helpful. Avoid any distractions while you are studying and balance your work and study life. If you need help, don’t be afraid to attend your classes’ office hours.
2. Find a company that is a good match.
Don’t apply to companies for the sake of its renowned reputation and/or nice salary. Apply to those that you are genuinely interested in or those that are related to your major. Consider the company’s required skills as well as its advantages and disadvantages, such as its locations. Henceforth, research the company you are applying to!
3. Here are some tips in writing your resume.
1. Avoid an excessive amount of white space.
2. Include contact info, preferably your college’s email.
3. List your GPA if it is 3.0 or higher.
4. Have a clear and concise objective that aligns with the job position you are applying for.
5. Use bold keywords in section headings.
6. Use phrases instead of sentences.
7. Do not list skills and qualifications.
8. Have someone who is working in a company or career center proofread and give you feedback on your app.
9. Type up a cover letter to show connections to experiences and jobs. My professor stated that she felt closer to the applicants that did so for her.
4. Finally, beware of what you post on social media. Nowadays, companies look up applicants on Facebook and/or other social media sites to check their true personalities and histories, so don’t be reckless regarding what you put up for the public to see.
And some tips on your interview …
1. Practice, practice, practice. Be prepared for questions asked regarding your strengths, weaknesses, and job position.
2. Be confident not arrogant.
3. Arrive early. Being 10 minutes early is better than being 10 minutes late.
4. Dress properly.
5. Stay calm.
6. Don’t chew gum.
7. Listen and pay attention during the interview.
8. Follow up with a thank-you letter.
